READING CARE SYMBOLS

How to read a care label

Wash tub

Washing

The number is the highest permitted wash temperature. No bar indicates a normal process, one bar a mild process and two bars a very mild process.

Triangle

Bleaching

The markings indicate whether any bleach, oxygen bleach only or no bleach is permitted.

Square

Drying

A circle in the square refers to tumble drying. Lines in the square describe natural drying, such as line drying or drying flat.

Iron

Ironing

More dots indicate a higher maximum sole-plate temperature. A cross means ironing may cause damage.

Circle

Professional textile care

Letters and bars in or below the circle are instructions for a professional textile cleaner, not for a household washing machine.

FACT-BASED

What the explanation is based on

The explanation follows the current textile-care categories and meanings. The tool is a reading aid and does not replace the label, garment manufacturer or a professional textile cleaner.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About care labels and symbols

Is the temperature on the care label compulsory?

The number indicates the highest permitted temperature. Washing colder may sometimes be possible, but it must also suit the soil level, detergent and any hygiene requirements.

What do one or two bars beneath the wash tub mean?

One bar calls for a mild process with less mechanical action. Two bars call for a very mild process, often with a smaller load and greatly reduced movement.

Can clothing without a drying symbol go in the tumble dryer?

That is not automatically certain. Check the other care instructions and the garment manufacturer’s information. When in doubt, choose natural drying.

What if the label is missing or illegible?

Consult the manufacturer where possible. Do not decide based only on the assumed fibre; coatings, adhesives, linings and decorations can be decisive.
